MT KENYA PACKING LIST

Enumerated below please find a guide to what you require for the Mt Kenya Climb expedition

(i) A good pair of climbing boots. This is the most vital part of the hiking gear (Safari boots & sneakers are not recommended as the Mountain terrain is quite rugged and one needs a quite strong shoe): Gaiters that protect your shoes from getting wet inside. You also need to carry a warm, light pair of shoes to wear while at camp when relaxing.

(ii) A heavy warm Jacket (water proof)

(iii) 1 Pair of water resistant overcoat (Basic & light)

(iv)Hand gloves at least 3 Pairs (you might need to change if you get wet, or wear all of them at once).

(V) At least 4 pairs of woolen socks (Should be long)

(Vi) At least 1 Pair of sweater - Fleece sweaters are light and warm enough.

(Vii) At least 2 pairs of T-shirts - make sure they have polyester in them. Cotton is good for sleeping in or when in the camp and not sweating in them.

(Viii) At least 2 pairs of sweat shirts

(iX) At least 2 pairs of trousers (Water resistant). Jeans type of trousers is highly discouraged as you need to be light when going up the Mt.

(X) 2 water drinking bottle (Gym Type) - you have to keep hydrated all the time. Drink before you are thirsty is the motto for mountaineers.

(xi) 2pairs of Marvin's (Warm head gear)

(Xii) 1 Warm sleeping bag - (mountain sleeping bag).

(Xiii) A camping bag (should be good quality as there is nothing annoying as going up the Mt with a bag which has loose straps)

(Xiv) A torch (normal size) - 2 pairs of batteries and woolen socks to store them in.

(xv) Your national ID (if resident) / Passport (non resident). WE WILL NEED TO PROVIDE THIS AT THE GATE BEFORE WE ARE ALLOWED ENTRY TO THE PARK

(XVI) High energy snacks like chocolates and sweets. These help the body retain heat and provide energy. Also glucose is light to carry and one can carry this or put it in their water. Will you also provide re-hydration salts for the climbers?

(XVII) Polythene bags (garbage size) to keep your clothes dry in case it rains. This also helps in covering the rucksack bag in case it rains.

(XIX) 1 Pair of light shoes to be worn whilst at the camp

Remember as you go up the Mt you need to be as light as possible thus don't pack things like towels etc....... just things necessary for your survival!!!! Even soap is not required!!!!! It would be too cold even to change your SHIRT!! Please note as mountaineers we will Practice the LNT - Leave No Trace. What we carry up the mountain, must come back down for proper disposal. This initiative was started by NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) and the OUTWARD BOUND Trusts on Mt. Kenya, Mt. Kilimanjaro and Ruwenzori National Parks and is rather mandatory .

(B) PHYSICAL PREPARATION.

Well for this bit it, varies from one individual to the other, but generally we advice the following:

(i) As we shall be doing a lot of walking it would be of great importance that one should be comfortable walking for long hours. To be able to cope with this owe normally encourage indulging in the following for about 4 weeks:

(a) Aerobics: helps in cardiovascular bit, breathing by strengthening the lungs

(b) Jogging: helps in the general fitness of the body as well as strengthening the legs.

(c) Brisk walking

(d) To be able to cope with the altitude we normally encourage one to attempt climbing "The Ngong Hills" and to get a fill of the terrain to attempt climbing

(e) Cycling & Swimming are also great for breathing skills on the mountain.

(ii) One also needs the right mind set (that you will make it) despite the stories one has heard about climbing Mt Kenya.

All in the entire physical preparation bit should be analyzed versus the general fitness of an individual and medical history.

As for insurance cover we would highly recommend one to take if they can afford but it is not a prerequisite as the route that we will be taking is the safest in terms of any accidents occurring.

If you do not have these items, do not be disheartened, you can hire some of the equipment/clothing from us.
